Salvage Swings is a temporary pavilion built by the architecture practice Somewhere Studio led by University of Arkansas faculty Jessica Colangelo and Charles Sharpless. The project was the winner of the 2019 City of Dreams annual international design competition.
The pavilion is constructed from cross-laminated timber that was salvaged from the shipping palettes of the Stadium Drive Residence Hall construction project on the University of Arkansas campus. The design consists of 12 repetitive modules that frame individual swings and views of the surrounding landscape. The swings are designed to be easily assembled and disassembled with a small group of volunteers. Prefabricated finger joint connections and manageable piece sizes allows for the project to be flat-packed, shipped, and site assembled in a matter of days. The modular design allows the swings to be installed in new places and configurations.
The first installation of the Salvage Swings was on Roosevelt Island, New York in the summer of 2019. The swings were installed in a triangle plan formation to host summer activities, such as picnics and community gatherings. The second installation of Salvage Swings is currently on display on Vol Walker Lawn in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The swings are installed in a line configuration to frame views of the school and campus community.
